Ballindalloch Estate, as many of you may know, is not just famous for its long history of Scotch whisky production. It is also known globally for its pedigree herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle, the oldest one in the world. Today, Aberdeen Angus (‘Black Angus’) cattle are the second most successful breed globally. They are bred around the world because of their exceptional qualities for beef production. Given the longevity and size of the Ballindalloch herd, many of the animals bred today can trace their ancestry back to those that have graced the fields in front of the castle. 

The relationship between whisky and Aberdeen Angus is more important than you may think for us here at Ballindalloch. Our pedigree herd is key to the circular economy of single malt production at Ballindalloch Estate. Our herd of Aberdeen Angus eats the draff from the distillery and also provides key fertiliser for the fields while they are fallow in the crop rotation. This is a vital part of what allows Ballindalloch to be one of the very few single estate distilleries in the world.

This year marks the 150th edition of the AACS Herd Book, a major milestone, and the collaboration through a special release of Ballindalloch Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a very enjoyable way to celebrate it. The Macpherson-Grants of Ballindalloch are delighted to be combining the two key pillars that have made the Estate renowned around the globe. 

The Ballindalloch Aberdeen Angus 150th release is a carefully selected combination of first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels and a first-fill ex-Sherry butt. The marriage is slightly more sherry-heavy (approximately 50%) than the usual Ballindalloch Single Malt releases.
